Monday, December 1, 1975 - The Sanford Herald - Checkers masters are locked in duel
An article on 1975 Southeastern Checker Tournament at Palomino Restaurant & Motel in Sanford, NC held over Thanksgiving weekend (We/Th/Fr/Sa). Clint Pickard sponsored this tourney with free rooms for all entrants and a Thanksgiving dinner for player & wives. Thanksgiving hams were given out as door prizes. Elbert Lowder jumps to the lead by beating his arch rival Ed Scheidt by Wednesday afternoon the first day of the ty. Both are past State and Southeastern champions. Wednesday, trophies were presented to the state junior champion Tim Laverty of Durham and runner-up Ronald Spivey of Sanford. Richard Fortman from Springfield, Illinois, attended this tournament, and at this time, was a 4 times IL State Champion and a 7 times Cook Co. Champ. This Grandmaster Postal Player later authors "Basic Checkers" a 7 part Checker Study Set, and wins two more IL State Championships.
